In this episode, Marilyn Lynch joins the podcast to share the life and legacy of her late husband, Matthew James Lynch, who passed away on May 25, 2024, at the age of 44. A devoted husband, father of three, and talented chef, Matt died from an apparent kratom-induced seizure. Matthew was pursuing a degree in accounting at Liberty University, where he maintained a 3.61 GPA. He participated in Celebrate Recovery and was connected to AA, maintaining 1,037 days of sobriety from alcohol when he passed.
A Florida-born skater as a kid, later becoming a drummer as part of his deep love of music—especially metal—he was known for his devotion to his family. After enduring chronic pain from a car accident, Matt sought alternatives to prescription opioids and began using kratom, a legal herbal substance marketed as natural and safe. What began as a hopeful path to healing quietly evolved into a difficult dependency, culminating in a series of unexplained seizures and ultimately, his untimely passing.
The autopsy report later confirmed kratom as a contributing factor in his death. A postmortem toxicology screen conducted via liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) detected mitragynine at 5.2 mg/L and 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-HMG) at 0.74 mg/L. Naloxone was present, due to attempted reversal of opioid effects, by emergency responders. Amphetamines, benzodiazepines, traditional opioids, ethanol, cocaine metabolites, or gabapentin/pregabalin were NOT detected. At time on death, Matthew was on prescribed anti-seizure, heart and cholesterol medications. Today, Marilyn now honors his memory by speaking out, sharing his story to raise awareness about the unregulated risks of kratom.

Are you more attuned to your senses after kratom cessation? Scott started off on powder ten years ago and began using extracts in more recent years. After many quit attempts, and his drug use escalating to poly-substance binges, Scott hit a bottom at an ER visit after using meth. A foreign trip to an overseas city was how he was able to stop consuming kratom in the fall of 2024.

Defining what sober is for yourself, based on your improved quality of life, not by what you are abstinent from. Kendall is a middle school teacher who was previous addicted to tramadol. He first developed a bad habit with extract capsules, which he quit, then relapsed taking the kava-kratom tonics. Kendall is an example that not every case of disordered kratom use is severe, and not every relapse results into a spiraling decent into oblivion. But kratom has abuse potential and is not for everyone, especially if you are hiding it from a loved one such as a spouse, and you are lying about and overspending on your kratom consumption.

Stea, PhD discusses his book "Mind the Science" and shares strategies to navigate the complexities of the alternative health sector. How to cope when life keeps on "life-ing". Jahred hails from Hawaii, where he quit a 7-year addiction to powder (his first five or so years) and then at the end, mixing in extracts. With the help of a significant other, he tapered from June 2024 from about 42 grams per day to about 8 grams per day, when he jumped off cold turkey - aided by several comfort prescriptions from his doctor.

Nolan and Desiree talk about their personal timelines feeling better after quitting kratom. Mark is an expat from Europe living in Thailand as a digital nomad. He was surprised by how an unassuming kratom tea product he bought created a physical dependency and he had a hard time quitting during 2024. English is not his native language, but his story gives us insight how kratom is used by non-Americans in places outside of United States.

Libby and Jacob talk about recognizing you have an addiction without or before bad things start to happen. Ian works for a well-known company that distributes kratom-kava drinks to some 30,000 stores in the U.S. Many people report this product to be starkly more addictive than plain leaf kratom, and Ian himself has developed a dependency he has had trouble stopping. He talks to Charlie about:
* The misleading promotion of the product as an energy drink.
* The measures the company uses to counter the concerns of cautious new retail outlets worried about the negative reports associated with the product.
* The typical store has a handful of the same customers drinking large volumes of the product, e.g. an average of 12 customers per every 100 units moved.
* The company's practice of giving six samples per store to the distributor allows Ian to afford his addiction.
* Severe cases of addiction among customers that Ian has encountered during his work, and that other people working for the company in his role are also experiencing difficult, hard-to-quit dependencies on the product they are helping to distribute.
* The company-wide denial about the addictive potential of the product.
