Cornel N. Stanciu, M.D., C.P.E., M.R.O. is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine and the Director of Addiction Services at New Hampshire Hospital. As an Addiction Psychiatrist, Dr. Stanciu is involved in clinical care, research, and policy concerning services and treatments for people with addictive disorders. Throughout his career, Dr. Stanciu has played an active role in academia having published over 40 papers on themes related to addictive disorders, particularly new psychoactive drugs, such as Kratom, and has received multiple awards for excellence in research and clinical care.

A voice mail from a listener. Cody has a history of poly-substance addiction. With a military background, he excels at staying fit and on track. But he found himself struggling with kratom after finding it a couple years ago, and it reminded him of his days on stronger opioids. Hiding your kratom addiction. From Courtney's email to the show: "...after {getting up to} 44gpd in capsules, I went cold turkey. I discovered kratom after my mom had passed in February last year - I used to have a pill habit so when my mom left us with oxys, I ended up taking all of them, only to run out and behold - kratom had been discovered. I want to somehow advocate for those who want to quit this stuff because I actually can attest to all of the withdrawals and how addictive they are."

Why do kratom users carry around spoons and a knife? Jack got to spending up to $600 a week on kratom and becoming 40 pounds underweight in part because of often throwing up after eating meals as a result of kratom-related nausea. After a short-term detox, Jack is about to reach being a year kratom free by helping to lead the Saturday morning quitting meeting, naltrexone, and therapy.

Having fun kratom-free. Sober from both alcohol and drugs for over a decade, it took Matt about 10 months to hit a bottom with kratom. Through the 12 steps and MAT (including the Sublocade shot), he's now giving back to the community by hosting online kratom support meetings.

Escalatory risks of kratom use. Ryan quit drinking six years ago, but when his beloved dad died, he became addicted to the popular kratom/kava drinks, spending upward of $30,000 on the habit.
