Chris hit a hard kratom bottom: relapse after a rehab stint, lost two jobs, relationship ending, pending eviction from parent's home, nearly losing custody of her beloved son, and a crashed car. Learning from past lessons, Chris jumped into online meetings and focusing on getting sober for herself, to kick kratom in May 2024.

Austin was age 25 when his dad found him deceased in the family's basement. According to the post-death toxicology and autopsy reports, he did not have pre-existing conditions nor any illicit or prescription drugs in his system.
"Though kratom related deaths are low when compared to its widespread use, the denial that kratom use does not result in fatalities is false and misleading. Mitragynine has been confirmed as the sole toxicological finding in overdose deaths and has played a role in other adverse effects, including hepatic injury, seizures, and coma."

Saying no to "People Pleasing". Opiate free for almost 20 years and booze free for almost 15 years, but prone to transfer addictions, Shane started taking kratom mostly to address mental health issues. But with his first couple kratom uses, he had that "oh I like this" similar to using opiates. After figuring out he had a mental health misdiagnosis, during his second and hopefully his last kratom quit, Shane is using supplements, SMART Recovery and kratom meetings to avoid his inner voice justifying him returning to kratom.

Don't engage in analysis paralysis about your kratom quit. After her husband was shot in Iraq a decade plus ago, Frankie started abusing pain pills prescribed to her spouse. Eventually, she started having kidney issues, liver spots on her skin and hair falling out. Also abusing benzos and booze, she was able to finally quit after joining a WhatsApp group. To say off kratom, she goes to AA meetings in person and has a video of her horrible withdraw on hand to watch if she gets an urge to use kratom.

Cornel N. Stanciu, M.D., C.P.E., M.R.O. is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine and the Director of Addiction Services at New Hampshire Hospital. As an Addiction Psychiatrist, Dr. Stanciu is involved in clinical care, research, and policy concerning services and treatments for people with addictive disorders.
